aSmart HUD +SpeedCams
aSmart HUD + is simple and clear vehicle digital dashboard featured by
- HUD mode
- SHORT TIME WEATHER FORECAST
- IPOD PLAYLIST REMOTE CONTROL
- ADJUSTABLE TRANSPARENCY GOOGLE MAPS SCREEN
- EDITABLE FIXED SPEED CAMERAS DATABASE
- EDITABLE RED LIGHT CAMERAS DATABASE for USA, Australia and Canada
It visualizies your
current speed
average speed,
time,
heading,
altitude,
trip elapsed time,
distance/time and direction to stored Home location,
weather forecast for nearest 48 hours the with 3-hour time interval,
maximum reached speed (during the current trip or all your trips), maximum altitude and maximum distance to the starting point of your trip.
Also it shows
color coded distance to the nearest known fixed speed camera;
it's speed limit (if known);
it's position, relatively to your moving direction, what gives you an idea is the camera in front or behind you;
On approach aSmartHUD+ will give you sound and visual warning. Warning also will be given in case your speed exceeds the speed limit set for that camera.
The database includes an information about speed cameras in
Europe (whole EU)
USA
Canada
Australia
New Zealand
Brazil
South Africa
Unated Arab Emirates
Singapore
HongKong
Kuwait
Russia
Thailand.
NOTE: It's not guaranteed all speed cameras in your area are included into the database. However, we will release database updates right after the new information will become available.
The light version of this program without speed cameras database is called "aSmart HUD". You can read more about it here.
Tapping the "HUD" icon mirrors all the text, so if you position the iPhone horizontally under your car's windscreen you can see perfectly readable half-transparent reflection of the picture displayed.
We love this mode! We found it much more convenient compared to traditional car dashboards (especially on the roads of Western Europe, which are full of speed cameras and where you need to watch your speedometer all the time). And last but not the least - it just looks cool.
Note: this mode works pretty well at night time and twilight, but on direct sunlight the screen brightness can be insufficient. A couple of YouTube clips, demonstrating how it looks like: night and rainy day.
You can edit the speed cameras database by adding or removing cameras. Also you can change the camera speed limit.
To get acess to database editing screen tap the "pencil" icon on the "nearest camera" distance indicator. Note, when the GPS satellite signal has low precision the icon is dimmed, and mode is not available.
To store the speed limit change tap the button where the speed limit value is displayed.
"aSmart HUD+" can keep track on 4 speed limits, giving a warning (sound and visual) each time you crossing it. Normally, it's legal speed limits within cities, local roads and high-speed motorways. "Never exceed speed" is the speed you should not exceed under any conditions. For example, it can be a technical limit of your vehicle or the point where government can arrest your driving license.
You can access the Google Maps by tapping the "Map" button on the main commands menu.
Transparency of the Maps could be adjusted by dragging the slide bar on the screen bottom, so you can use speed reading and map at the same time. All standard gestures (like zooming and scrolling) are supported.
The "pin" button locks map center on your current location.
You can easily switch between Street, Satellite and Hybrid map types.
Note: this function uses the internet connection, so depending on your connection plan additional charges may apply.
Weather forecast is provided by Norwegian Meteorological Institute and the NRK. "aSmart HUD" uses the 3G or WiFi connection do retrieve the data, each weather update takes about 40-80 kilobytes. You can disable this feature by switching the "Display weather" to "Never". If "Every 3 seconds" option is on, the display will de switched between the weather data and "Distance to Start" in cycle.
Next two switches define time intervals for the data display. "+3 HR" will show the forecast for the time after 3 hours since cucurrent moment, "+9 HR" - 9 hours, etc.
Temperature units (C, F) are selectable on the "Units" tab in Preferences.
"Landscape" and "Portrait" screen modes supported;
You can switch off speed cameras detection by tapping on "nearest camera" info. Indeed, if you are too far from it, it's better to use the screen space for something more useful. Currently, it's direct distance to the starting point of your trip.
"Camera" icon on the "compass" circle indicates the position of the nearest camera. If the camera icon is on top of the screen, it's in front of you, if it's on the bottom, camera already is behind.
To get acess to database editing screen tap the "pencil" icon on the "nearest camera" distance indicator. Note, when the GPS satellite signal has low precision the icon is dimmed, and mode is not available.
To store the speed limit change tap the button where the speed limit value is displayed.
Three different compass styles.
By default compass show the direction where you are moving, not the direction your iPhone device is oriented. That means it cannot show your course in case the speed is zero. You can change this behavior by switching on the "Use 3GS Magnetometer" option on Preferences/Display screen tab (option is available only on iPhone 3GS or higher).
Trip time display: time elapsed since application startup.
Moving time display: time of your trip minus time spent for standing on traffic lights, fueling on petrol stations, etc (i.e. all the time when you are not moving and the speed is zero);
Direct distance/time to Home location display: the time is calculated on a basis if your current speed, and should be understood as "minimal time necessary to get to stored Home location on a direct line with current speed". Home location can be reset by tapping the "lightning" icon, located next to the distance;
You can select current iPod playlist, skip/rewind/pause/play music items, set the music player in Shuffle or Repeat mode.
Speed history log chart is placed on the bottom of the screen.
Speed log chart refresh rate and chart style (bars or dots) can be selected in Preferences.
With the "Limit Bars" chart style enabled the color of the bar depends on the speed limit you are driving within. Green, if below first speed limit (city), yellow if below second (public roads), etc.
Tap the speed indicator to switch into speed fullscreen mode. Cameras info is available there as well.
In Preferences, you can specify different measurement units (miles per hour, kilometers per hour, knots and meters per second), display color scheme, speed log chart refresh rate and chart style (bars or dots). With the "Limit Bars" chart style on the color of the bar depends on the speed limit you are driving within. Green, if below first speed limit (city), yellow if below second (public roads), etc.
Switch between 12/24 hours time display;
Try to switch "Speed camera limit units" to "mph" if you driving in UK or US;
Several sound options available: "Electro", "Beep" (just another sound to mark the speed limits) and "Morse", when a3DTrack HUD+ beeps morse-code for "ONE" when you crossing the first speed limit, "TWO" for second, and "THREE" for third. The startup sound is morse-coded word "HELLO".
Location Info (longitude and latitude, GPS measurement precision) and some more data is available on separate screen. You can adjust transparency of the "Location Info" screen to use both views at the same time.
Also you can see the maximum reached speed, altitude or distance from start, for you current trip or for for all the trips you ever did.

Several display color schemes are available.

Troubleshooting a.k.a FAQ
- Application "freezes" immediately after start:
After the first location data is obtained, application checking the database for the nearest speedcameras surounding you. This process can take 5-10 seconds. Also, it downloads fresh weather forecast. Parsing it can "freeze" application for a couple of seconds. Just give it a bit more time, everything should work.
- Application starts up, but speed indication is "frozen":
Most possible, it just cannot get the satellite signal of acceptable quality. iPhone is equipped with A-GPS chip, what means it calculates location in two stages: first, it using the cell towers. It's very fast, but gives data with low accuracy, up to 1-2 kilometers. This is not enough to calculate your speed! And second, it locates the GPS satellites, what gives 5-100 meters precision, but takes up to 5 minutes. If 5 minutes gone, but the speed is still zero:
- Tap the "satellite" icon - the "Location Info" screen will show you current GPS accuracy. Note, 3rd party applications cannot control GPS precision!
- Make sure you are under a clear sky. Strong sourse of radio waves like TV tower also can be a problem;
- Completely power off/power on your iPhone;
- Switch on/off "Location services" and "3G" support in your iPhone prefernces;
- Try to start the standard "Maps" application, wait until it shows your location with good precision ("small circle" around "your location"), and quit it (looks like sometimes it resets something in A-GPS chip).
- Try other speed-indicating applications, if you have any. We all using the same Apple API calls.
If they work, but our application doesn't - please contact us via support@atoll-ordenadores.com.
- Application quits ("crashes") after 3-10 seconds after startup:
Tap the "wrench" icon (call "Preferences" screen), got to "Weather" tab, switch "Show Weather" to "None", close "Preferences".
The weather forecast is provided by the yr.no website, and they can change the weather data format for some locations without notice. That happened once already, and about 1% of users experienced application crashes.
If it helped, please send us your coordinates (latitude and longitude) by email via support@atoll-ordenadores.com, we will try to fix the problem in nearest update.
- Weather data are different, then in reality:
Normally, the yr.no website finds the weather station (typically an airport), nearest to your location and retieves the data for it with 3-hour time interval. So, the reading should be understood like "average for nearest 3 hours for an area about 50 kilometers around".
- No "power cord on right side" landscape mode:
It's not enabled when you are in "Auto" screen mode (otherwize HUD mode doesn't work properly).
Call "Preferences", "Display" and switch "Screen" to "Landscape >".
- Image "doubles" in HUD mode:
Actually, it always "doubles", according to simple law of phisics: the windscreen has two surfaces and the iPhone reflects in both. However, one reflection is "more transparent" then another, so the mode itself is pretty much usable. This effect depends on the angle how your windscreen is installed and your position behind the steering wheel. Try to set the iPhone in different position on the car dashboard, use the windscreen mount and play with the "Brightness" settings in iPhone preferences.
- "Course" and "Compass" reading is wrong:
The "Compass" shows not the direction how your device is oriented, but the direction where you are moving. Hence, it's wrong when your speed is zero. Also, the precision is quite low if your speed is about 1-15 km/h.
Limitations
- The program is running only on GPS-enabled iPhones
3G
(second generation or higher)
with iPhone OS 3.1 or higher. No iPod Touch, 1st-generation iPhones or
minor OS versions supported.
- The precision is affected by the satellite signal
quality. On open-sky spaces it's pretty good, but under other
conditions can noticeably decrease. Also, after startup it requires
some
time to locate the necessary satellites, so during first minutes of
running the
measurement can be less effective.
If unsure, use the program only for reference, don't rely on it for
100%.
