aSpeedCam ScannerAir is an advanced vehicle digital dashboard featured by HUD mode and fully compatible with FoxyTag FIXED AND MOBILE SPEED CAMERAS DATABASE.

After registering you will be able to participate by signaling new cameras or by confirming existing ones. You would create trust links with the other users and benefit from more reliable information. This collaborative model makes that FoxyTag is today the most complete and up to date speed camera database in the world.

Of course, registering with FoxyTag.com is free. FoxyTag system works worldwide.

The lite version of the program called aSpeedCameras ScannerFix shares same user interface, but uses BUILT-IN speed cameras database. You can read more about it here.

aSpeedCam ScannerAir visualizies your

  • current speed
  • average speed,
  • time,
  • heading,
  • altitude,
  • trip elapsed time,
  • distance/time and direction to stored Home location,
  • current distance to the trip starting point.
  • maximum reached speed (during the current trip or all your trips), maximum altitude and maximum distance to starting point.

    Also it shows
  • positions of the nearest known speed cameras within an adjustible range;
  • color coded distance to the nearest known speed camera;
  • it's direction (if known);

    On approach aSpeedCam ScannerAir will give you sound and visual warning.

  • On the main radar screen the following marks can be displayed:

    - fixed speed camera. Orange icon color means the camera is active on your direction.

    - mobile speed camera.

    - "ghost" speed camera. We using term "ghost" for the cameras which location may be unreliable. For example, just added (or deleted) and not confirmed by other users.

  • This icon indicate "dangerous" direction, the direction where a driver could get a fine if he is speeding:

    - camera works in your driving direction. Be carefull!

    - camera is looking for drivers going in opposite direction.

    - camera is beaming in your right. Quite possible, it's on the secondary road or will be dangerous after you will do a turn.

    - camera works for two directions at the same time.

    If the direction of the camera is unknown this icon will be grayed out.

    - icon indicates network error occured. Most possible, you driving in the area where no 3G or WiFi connection available.

  • You can use the program without registering with FoxyTag system, but in this case you will be connected in TEST mode logged to separate TEST Database. All your contributions will therefore be visible only by other users in TEST mode. But when the you send correct password, then you connect to the main Database.
    Also, you cannot add cameras in case your speed is less 20 kmh and GPS precision is lower then 35 meters. In that cases the "ADD/DEL" icon will be grayed out.

  • You can tap "+" or "-" icons to adjust the radar range. The "2x" button increases the radar range by two times for a short period of time.

  • Cameras sensitivety level is adjustible. You can select different options to show/hide cameras depending on your and cameras heading:

  • You can add new camera just by a single tap at "radar" center:

    When you first pressing the "Add camera" screen your position is memorized, so you have time to finish the tagging process.
  • When a you trying to cancel a camera, only the closest camera with a heading difference less than 45 degrees will be affected, and only if this camera is closer than 75 meters.
  • After entering your FoxyTag userneme and password tap the "Login" button. The message below will show you, was your login successfull. In case your client is too old and no longer supported there should be "unsupported client version" message displayed. If so, please download the newer version, all our updates are free.

  • Please carefully read the FoxyTag tagging rules. That's important!

  • Program downloads the speed cameras data according your moving path, so internet connection (3G or WiFi) is required. Depending on your connection plan, some additional charges may apply.

  • Tapping the "HUD" icon mirrors all the text, so if you position the iPhone horizontally under your car's windscreen you can see perfectly readable half-transparent reflection of the picture displayed.
    We love this mode! We found it much more convenient compared to traditional car dashboards (especially on the roads of Western Europe, which are full of speed cameras and where you need to watch your speedometer all the time). And last but not the least - it just looks cool.
    Note: this mode works pretty well at night time and twilight, but on direct sunlight the screen brightness can be insufficient.

  • You can switch between different map styles:

    If you selected the monochrome map color, you can adjust it's brightness, what is especially useful at night time. Also, you can use the "invert" option invert map colors.

    Or switch the map off to save the internet traffic and battery life:

  • Landscape and portrait screen modes supported.

    You can manually set the screel layout or allow the iPhone select the mode depending of your iPhone position ("Auto").

  • aSpeedCam ScannerAir can keep track on 4 speed limits, giving a warning (sound and visual) each time you crossing it. Normally, it's legal speed limits within cities, local roads and high-speed motorways. "Never exceed speed" is the speed you should not exceed under any conditions. For example, it can be a technical limit of your vehicle or the point where government can arrest your driving license.

  • You can stop/play/skip/rewind the current music item in your curent iPod playlist:

    Note, you need to use iPod appliction to start initial playback.

  • Tap the speed indicator to switch into speed fullscreen mode. Cameras info is available there as well.

  • Lock map rotation option lock the map North on top.

  • Trip time display: time elapsed since application startup.

  • Moving time display: time of your trip minus time spent for standing on traffic lights, fueling on petrol stations, etc (i.e. all the time when you are not moving and the speed is zero);

  • Direct distance/time to Home location display: the time is calculated on a basis of your current speed, and should be understood as "minimal time necessary to get to stored Home location on a direct line with current speed". Home location can be reset by tapping the "lightning" icon, located next to the distance;

  • Location Info (longitude and latitude, GPS measurement precision) and some more data is available on separate screen. You can adjust transparency of the "Location Info" screen to use both views at the same time.

    Also on the "Records" screen you can see the maximum reached speed, altitude or distance from start, for you current trip or for for all the trips you ever did.

  • Tap "average speed" indicator to switch to time or altitude display. Tapping the "Nearest Camera" will switch the camera detection off and show the distance to starting point of your trip.

  • Speed log chart is located below the camera data.

  • You can choose between 6 different color themes.

  • Several sound options available: "Electro", "Beep" (just another sound to mark the speed limits) and "Morse", when aSpeedCam ScannerAir beeps morse-code for "ONE" when you crossing the first speed limit, "TWO" for second, and "THREE" for third. The startup sound is morse-coded word "HELLO".
  • You can specify different measurement units (km/h, mph, knots and meters per second), display color scheme, sounds and more.

  • Troubleshooting a.k.a FAQ
    • Application starts up, but speed indication is "frozen":

      Most possible, it just cannot get the satellite signal of acceptable quality. iPhone is equipped with A-GPS chip, what means it calculates location in two stages: first, it using the cell towers. It's very fast, but gives data with low accuracy, up to 1-2 kilometers. This is not enough to calculate your speed! And second, it locates the GPS satellites, what gives 5-100 meters precision, but takes up to 5 minutes. If 5 minutes gone, but the speed is still zero:

      • Tap the "satellite" icon - the "Location Info" screen will show you current GPS accuracy. Note, 3rd party applications cannot control GPS precision!
      • Make sure you are under a clear sky. Strong sourse of radio waves like TV tower also can be a problem;
      • Completely power off/power on your iPhone;
      • Switch on/off "Location services" and "3G" support in your iPhone prefernces;
      • Try to start the standard "Maps" application, wait until it shows your location with good precision ("small circle" around "your location"), and quit it (looks like sometimes it resets something in A-GPS chip).
      • Try other speed-indicating applications, if you have any. We all using the same Apple API calls. If they work, but our application doesn't - please contact us via support@atoll-ordenadores.com.

    • Image "doubles" in HUD mode:

      Actually, it always "doubles", according to simple law of phisics: the windscreen has two surfaces and the iPhone reflects in both. However, one reflection is "more transparent" then another, so the mode itself is pretty much usable. This effect depends on the angle how your windscreen is installed and your position behind the steering wheel. Try to set the iPhone in different position on the car dashboard, use the windscreen mount and play with the "Brightness" settings in iPhone preferences.

    • "Course" and "Compass" reading is wrong:

      The "Compass" shows not the direction how your device is oriented, but the direction where you are moving. Hence, it's wrong when your speed is zero. Also, the precision is quite low if your speed is about 1-15 km/h.

  • Limitations
    • The program is running only on GPS-enabled iPhones 3G (second generation or higher) with iPhone OS 3.1 or higher. No iPod Touch, 1st-generation iPhones or minor OS versions supported.
    • The precision is affected by the satellite signal quality. On open-sky spaces it's pretty good, but under other conditions can noticeably decrease. Also, after startup it requires some time to locate the necessary satellites, so during first minutes of running the measurement can be less effective. If unsure, use the program only for reference, don't rely on it for 100%.
